Why paper marbling? Why rocks?

I’ve always loved making things with my hands. But, living in a small urban apartment meant I needed to find a craft that didn’t require flammable gasses, kilns, or heavy equipment. That meant goodbye welding, ceramics and glass blowing, and hello paper marbling! With a few sheets of plastic to cover vulnerable surfaces, and a long weekend to work, I can turn my small kitchen into a marbling workshop.

After a few long weekends, I’d amassed quite a stack of fancy papers, but I didn’t really have a use for them. Hikes during the early days of the COVID pandemic lockdown lead to inspiration. What if I “borrow” rocks from my favorite hiking trail, cover them in the marbled papers, coat them in resin to make them waterproof, and return them back to the forest for fellow observant hikers to find?

The goal with the hidden rocks is two-fold: to contribute to the joy-generating economy (because it’s always a delight to find a hidden treasure!), and to encourage people to be in the moment; because there are wonders big and small to behold all around us – if you’re present and looking for them.
